At first I wanted to draw a creature from a different species more like a mutation, then I decided to draw a girl with a crazy background. In my background I incorporated some symbols and random things that would make it pop. This artwork isn´t just a random thing or person. The main piece of my drawing is a girl and she shows how we are not perfect. She's half cursed and in the background are four leaf clovers to show that you can be lucky at times, some of them are deformed, to symbolize that luck doesn't always last.

In order to make a successful project, I needed to consider adding the tornado affected states, thunderstorm clouds and tornadoes and systems of the weather and temperatures. I began my process by adding the person first then adding cumulonimbus and tornadoes. Even by adding a radar and storm prediction center convective outlook and a Christian sign which makes me the god of severe weather.

I have quotes from my favorites song artist because whenever I remember those quotes I just feel good about myself and how it has helped me get rid of stress. 3:34 is when I started taking risk, the risk was to look at the future and not the past, I’ve always been too afraid to look at the future so I was always looking at the past but ever since 3:34 happened, I started looking at the future and tried to make it the bright side of the brain.

My portrait is a representation of how because of quarantine, most people have been stuck indoors for majority of their days and just want to go outside and do something which is what the grassy background represents. The reason why my character is in pieces is because due to staying indoors, they slowly felt like they were losing themselves.

Since I'm from New York, I wanted to put a New York background in it with buildings and the Brooklyn Bridge. I decided to put little words in my glasses for fun. The areas where I felt strong in my work was my background. I had a great mixture of colors and I used different art materials to make it accurate.

I wanted to show bright colors that give me hope that everything will get better. I use a quote that reminds me to love myself and not judge or feel bad about my body. I notice that society has this view of this perfect skinny, thick, long hair with a pretty face and has really impacted many girls in society, so I want to show that no matter how you look you should love yourself because you are only one and if you don’t love yourself then you can’t show love for others.

I’m very satisfied with my project. And I love how it came out. This project took lot of time, and working on it I see all the progress from my thumbnails. With taking my peers advice, I was able to make my project better. Taking advice from adding color or outlining some features. I was really able to express myself and important things about me, but still keep you wondering, just like in Basquiat’s work. There are some features in here that you won’t think too hard about, but it actually means a lot to me.

This is my final portrait I definitely used most of my ideas with the monochrome, dance symbol, paint, and my lucky number. But I decided to go for a different angle in making a second picture of me that isn’t as detailed, and the reason for this is because I felt it acted as the unfinished me with the bruises of red and discouraging words crossed out to show my beautiful monochrome self.

I felt this was a perfect illustration that showed me and my life; how I view it. Leaving my face blank without color was my decision and it was because Brown of course would've been the most realistic and expected color, but it doesn’t define me. It doesn’t make my character or effects who I am internally without the layers. My skin color already affects how people view me from the outside and has an impact. I didn’t want that to be all my audience sees in this picture.

I created a self-portrait by getting inspiration from things/objects I have at home, and taking their shapes to form new one to create these “bubbles” around me in the middle. I wanted to paint myself with non-human skin colors. I really like how the little stick figures added more to look at because I was really worried about too much negative space. The color of the numbers and the actual bubble itself were chosen by people that mean a lot to me, and I let them decide how they wanted it to look like.

The second is the landscape that I wanted to put on it. I put Mount Fuji because I love Japan. One of my dreams is to go and learn about its culture and how beautiful its landscapes. I put my favorite things, video games and piano that I play.

Then I started to draw thumbnails to start the project artwork. I used whatever I had never me which was three pens. That I had use to sketch out the thumbnails. I began to start my under drawings that I was continuing with ideas of my thumbnails. But just using pencil. Next I experimented the materials I had in my house for my project

In my painting have a symbol of a Medal and eyes to represent someone who suffers from social anxiety and the feeling of being looked at by many eyes. The eyes can represent people who are waiting for you to fail so they can laugh at you. I didn't do a realistic self portrait I used the character of the sun who has angel numbers in their eyes and is being held up by their medal because they feel the constant need to be reminded that they are worthy of something and is constantly trying to prove it to others.

Have you ever been really stressed lately? Or just can't get your mind off of things? Art could probably help you with that. Crazy right--but art is known for reducing stress and calming you down. Yes, it might seem “too hard,” but as time passes and the more you keep practicing, it will eventually get better. I know, I know. “Everyone says that.” The truth is, it's actually correct. You could be drawing loads of stick men right now, but in a few months that could easily change! Drawing not only reduces stress, but it could also get you some money. I mean, you probably already know that, but people would pay loads of money for you to paint them something that has meaning. Having something important to someone represented in a picture or image is powerful. Art can tell stories that make you feel less alone, and more connected to the world. Give art making a try!

"Dance and Music Can Heal You"
Brooklyn Community Arts & Media High School (BCAM)

Let’s talk about expressing yourself and the many ways you can do that. One way is to either listen to music, dance, or both. Today I want to share how you can express yourself through dance and music. People can express themselves in their own way by listening to whatever makes them happy, sad, etc. and dance the way they want to without worrying about other people's judgment. Dance and music can heal people emotionally and physically. Dance and music allowed me to express the person I am today. There are a lot of music artists/groups who write songs about being yourself. A K-pop group called BTS makes music about mental health, finding happiness, and social issues that the youths of both South Korea and the world can relate to. When I had a dance performance, we had to pick an awareness to support. The awareness we represented was breast cancer. The song and the dance matched together so well, it made a lot of people cry. That's when I started to believe that dance and music can help with expressing yourself and healing.

To me anime is a part of my soul and it makes me who I am today. I can see different perspectives that I might never have seen otherwise. The reason why seeing perspectives are important to me is because I can know what someone's motives might be towards me. It shows how some people may act one way towards some, but will show to a completely side to others. If I didn’t get interested in anime or never started watching it, I feel like my life would have been boring because you don’t know what you're missing
out on. To me, they are better than the American cartoons because they have better graphics and details that makes it easier to understand the characters because they are drawn more human like. It also makes me laugh more than anything! If I didn’t start watching anime, I would be quite naive today. I also would have never considered trying to read comics and my opinion about certain things might have never changed. Anime has opened my mind and my creativity has evolved.

"Just Not Thin Enough"
Brooklyn Community Arts & Media High School (BCAM)
Teacher: Katherine Ross
Every morning a girl would hop on the scale. The number would determine how much discipline she would show herself. She had finally hit her goal. She was now classified as underweight. Yet the next morning, there was another goal, even lower than the one before. The scale could read 0 but the word ‘fat’ was written all over her body. Normal activities would make her dizzy. But no one would notice or care. No matter how much she weighed, it was never enough, never be thin enough. Social comparison controls lives, silences voices. You can’t be too fat and you can’t be too skinny, you have to be in between, but there's never an in between. I was "too skinny." I was in 7th grade and going to gym. It was the fitness gram test. I did the day's workout. I remember being so tired and out of breath, my throat dry. My friends looked confused, and said “You’re already in shape. Why do you have to do this test? You’re already skinny, no need to be skinnier." Not every skinny person is in shape/healthy. These comments can ruin someone. These comments ruined the way that I looked at myself. My own mind turned against me. ‘You’re all skin and bones,’ yet to me I looked huge. It made me have a distorted body image and have a fear of gaining more weight. If you are the type of person that jokes about weight, stop. I want to tell you another story. This time there’s no scale, no goal, no struggle, no disease that holds her brain captive. Instead there's a girl standing in front of a mirror. She sees the truth, intending to accept her body today, love her body tomorrow and appreciate her body always.

For this piece I used markers, watercolors, acrylic paint and color pencils. I drew the self portraits on paper, cut and glued them on to a separate piece of paper. I made this piece in my room and I found the process at times frustrating, especially when my drawings didn’t come out how I wanted them to. As an artist I am inspired by my peers and my art is guided by my feelings. With this piece my intention is to show different aspects of my personality and things that I value.

As an artist I struggle with perfectionism as I am very picky and an overthinker.

For It's All About Me, I used stickers, acrylic paint, glow in the dark paint and a Polaroid self-portrait. I used symbols that represent me—music, dance, photography marine biology and art. I also used a BTS quote of a song that they wrote to their fans that I really love. I wanted my piece to be simple and joyful as I am. This was my first time making a self-portrait and I had no idea where to start, I struggled to draw myself so I used a Polaroid selfie. I experimented with colors and used colors to represent how bright I shine. I am a self-taught artist and use YouTube to learn techniques. My art doesn’t always meet my expectations but I notice that it brings my loved ones joy; art allows me to praise myself for my creativity. I would like to thank my mom for supporting my passions and my counselor Ms. Jazz for providing a safe environment for creative expression.

My art is a reflection on my life and my mind. It is a neat representation of my messy, colorful and confusing life. This piece was made with cutouts from my old journal, watercolor and acrylic paint, paint markers, sticker, glitter, gorilla glue and pieces of dried paint that was peeled off from my paint pallet. I made this piece by cutting out my favorite parts from the pages in my journal and gluing them on a small poster board after which I left to dry and continued the next day by adding paint glitter and stickers that I found around the house. After I waited for the paint to dry I cut out my favorite parts from the paint that I peeled off of my pallet and pasted them on to the blank spaces.

It is hard for me to draw myself because how I look to others never really reflects my image of me. So I decided to focus more on the surrounding design of my piece and to print out a picture of myself that I can collage to fit the aesthetic. I wanted to break up my face to show how hard it is for me to find myself and how in a way, this art piece is a small look into my image of myself in my mind.
